Our trips are “Un-plugged” experiential learning voyages. Teamwork is required which fosters acceptance of others, cultivates personal responsibility and helps develop leadership skills. In 2023 we acquired the Zeeto to take more kids sailing on Lake Superior. We may rename this vessel the Algonquin, after a vessel that was brought to Lake Superior in 1842. Our preliminary budget to purchase and renovate a used steel schooner is $250,000. Long-Term: Build a Larger Vessel Our goal from the start has been to build the Alice Craig, a replica of a US Revenue Cutter that sailed Lake Superior from 1859 to 1887. But it could be several years before we are in a financial position to lay her keel. Our morning, afternoon and sunset sails are designed to get everybody involved, and no sailing experience is required. Improve your sailing skills and experience night sailing, standing watches and sailing offshore in varying weather conditions. Under the command of a licensed captain, trainees will actively participate in the operation of the ship. They will live, cook, eat and sleep on board the Abbey Road or Zeeto while exploring Lake Superior. By the end of a voyage they will know the fundamentals of how to sail a schooner. We have room for 6 trainees over the age of 18, (or 13 and over accompanied by a parent or guardian) who are willing to stand watch, tend the sails, and steer by the stars as we transit Lake Superior overnight and explore distant shores. These trips can be customized to suit your desires. Depending on the length of the trip, we may explore the islands, sea caves, beaches, or lighthouses of the Apostle Islands archipelago. For over 100 years Sea Scouting has promoted seamanship, service to the community, leadership skills and social interactions through activities in, on, under and near the water. Sea Scouting provides limitless opportunities and exciting challenges that are not found anywhere else, and can lead to a career in the military, the merchant marines, or the recreational boating industry. Sea Scouts from the Bayfield area have participated in the Duluth Tall Ships Festivals, made several voyages to Isle Royale, and spent countless weekends exploring the Apostle Islands aboard the Abbey Road. As an inclusive program through the Boy Scouts of America, Sea Scouting is open to all youth aged 14-21 (youth 11-13 may participate as club members).
