Introduction to Maritime Navigation Class

A two-day class hosted by Sea Scout Ship Luna #336 and Lake Superior Tall Ships.

Who:
• General public (age 13+ ), interested in learning basic navigation and piloting skills.
• Youth 13 to 20 years are invited to spend the weekend with the Sea Scouts. Please contact us for more information.

What: Learn basic maritime navigation and piloting:
• Chart basics: Projection, Scale, Latitude/Longitude, Soundings, Compass Rose, Variation, Deviation, Chart Symbols / Aids to Navigation
• Navigation Tools: Divider, Parallel Rulers, Magnetic Compass,
* Navigation tools will be available to share with classmates, however feel free to bring mechanical pencil, dividers, parallel rulers, and hand held compass if you own them.
• Dead Reckoning: DR Plot, Speed/Time/Distance, Navigation Log, bearings, triangulation
• Route Planning: Waypoints, Legs
• Navigation Exercises: Routes, Line of Position, Danger Bearing, Collision Bearing
• Float Plan: Who, What, When, Why, Where

When: Two Day Course:
• Saturday April 27th, 9AM -5PM & Sunday April 28th, 9AM -3:30PM

Cost:
• Class / supplies /lunch both days: $30.00
• Late fee after April 22nd: $5.00
