Rendezvous2018.jpg

Another busy year for the Abbey Road!

Despite the crummy weather this spring, the Abbey Road was out on the water for 87 days in 2019 with 723 guests; and sailed 1895 nautical miles on trips from Bayfield to the Apostle Islands, Grand Marais, MN and Duluth, MN.

Most of the trips were 3 to 4-hour half day or evening sails, and many of the guests (especially the Sea Scouts) were repeat sailors. Of the trips:

  • 23 days were with the area Sea Scouts

  • 11 days were trips with other area youth and school groups: 4H members, Boy Scouts, Ashland PACE, Washburn Ecology Club, and a group of kids from China

  • 8 days were trips with students from Northland College

  • 2 days were with members from Chequamegon Bay community.  We did not offer the Wednesday night community sails in 2019 as we did not receive a grant to do so like we have in years past

  • 10 days were Port Visits to the North House Folk School, the Duluth Festival of Sail, and our Classic Boat & Schooner Rendezvous

  • 24 days were bareboat charters

  • 6 days were public sails with passengers for hire

  • 3 days were sails that we donated to other non-profit groups

Our calendar for 2020 will fill up fast and requests to Sail With Us can be made on our website.

Thanks to the generosity of donors, revenue from the bareboat charters and public sails, LSTS did not charge a fee to take local area kids sailing on Abbey Road in 2019.

We continue to seek Volunteers, Buoyancy Brigade Members, Plank Owners and Corporate Partners to help us expand our programs into the future.

I really liked sailing on the boat. My favorite part was when I stood on the end of the boat, I could feel the wind going through my hair. Going on a sailboat was a completely new experience for me. The water looked really pretty. Sailing was generally calm and peaceful. Sailing was a very good experience that I was glad to have. I would recommend to anybody. -Ayden, 7th grade, OPS

The sailing trip was really fun, I hope I can do it again soon! I know that I might be able to go again but at the same time it was a once in a lifetime opportunity and I will never get the chance to do that again. When I say once in a lifetime opportunity, it means every single moment in life is once in a lifetime because that thing that just happened will never happen again, and even if it does happen it would never be the same, and you will always remember the first time you did something as if it were yesterday. You would remember almost every detail of it, I know I still remember most of the stuff that happened that day, almost exactly in the order it happened. -Sadie, 8th grader, OPS
