are curious, adventurous, and ready to learn.
No prior experience needed—just a willingness to try something new!
Program Details
5 days/4 nights: Monday–Friday
Sail and sleep aboard a tall ship
All meals and instruction included
Cost: $984 per trainee

Maritime Careers in Our Region
Our Introduction to Maritime Careers Program will prepare you for high-demand jobs right here in the Chequamegon Bay region and beyond. Here are just a few examples:
Cruise Service or Ferry Deckhand
Duties: Assist with passenger boarding, vessel operations, docking, maintenance, and safety.
Pay: $15–$20/hour depending on experience and certifications.
A great way to accumulate the sea time needed for a Captain’s License.
Marina Dockhand
Duties: Assist boaters with docking, fueling, and loading; maintain docks and facilities; provide customer service.
Pay: $14–$19/hour
Local Relevance: Common entry-level role at marinas in Bayfield, Washburn, and Ashland.
Charter Fleet Boat Detailer (Interior & Exterior)
Duties: Wash, wax, and polish hulls and decks. Clean cabins, heads, galleys, and upholstery; restock supplies; ensure vessels are guest-ready. May also assist with seasonal prep, inspections, and light maintenance.
Pay: Entry-level: $18–$20/hour
Skills Gained: Attention to detail, customer service, marine surface care, time management.
Boat Yard Laborer
Duties: Haul, clean, and repair boats; assist with painting, sanding, and winterizing; operate yard equipment.
Pay: $16–$19/hour in Wisconsin
Skills Gained: Mechanical aptitude, safety procedures, teamwork.
Pathway: Entry-level role that can lead to more skilled positions.
Marine Technician
Duties: Repair and maintain engines, electrical systems, and onboard equipment.
Pay: $20–$30/hour; higher with certifications like ABYC or NMEA. Some marinas will pay for Marine Technician certifications.
Ordinary Seaman (Great Lakes Freighter)
Duties: Assist with cargo loading/unloading, line handling, deck maintenance, and emergency drills; live aboard ship during season.
Pay: $22–$25/hour + room/board
Pathway: Entry-level credentialed role that can lead to Able Seaman and higher.
U.S. Coast Guardsman (Enlisted)
Duties: Varies by specialty—search and rescue, law enforcement, navigation, environmental response.
Pay: Starting at $2,261/month + housing, food, and benefits
Perks: Tuition assistance, 30 days paid leave, career training, and travel.
