Fund A Sailor Scholarship Program

We are inviting you to help launch the next generation of mariners.

The maritime industry is facing a challenge: a critical shortage of skilled mariners is looming as the current workforce retires. At Lake Superior Tall Ships, we see this as an untapped opportunity for young men and women. That’s why we’re launching the Introduction to Maritime Careers Program in 2026.

This is a 5-day adventure where trainees learn knots, sail handling, vessel operation, navigation, personal safety, seamanship and log sea time toward a Merchant Marine Credential. It’s more than a sailing trip, it’s a gateway to the marine trades and a direct head start into a living-wage career on the water.

Why It Matters:

  • The maritime workforce is aging out and new talent is urgently needed.

  • Hands-on training builds confidence, skills, and career readiness.

  • Scholarships ensure access for youth who wouldn’t otherwise afford it.

  • Every $984 raised sponsors one trainee; $5,904 funds a full cohort of six. But even $50 can help start the journey.

  • Your gift will help launch a future mariner.
